ประธานฝ่ายสารสนเทศใช้ตัวย่อว่า CIO (อ่านว่า ซีไอโอ) งานสารสนเทศเป็นงานที่สำคัญที่สุดงานหนึ่ง เพราะหน่วยงานนี้ก็คือหน่วยงานที่ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นหลักนั่นเอง เป็นที่เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ประมวลผล และวิเคราะห์ แล้วส่งผล (สารสนเทศ) ให้ผู้ที่มีอำนาจ ใช้ในการตัดสินใจ หรือเพื่อไม่ให้ผู้ที่มีอำนาจตัดสินใจผิดพลาดเพราะขาดข้อมูล (บางทีใช้ในความหมายเดียวกันกับหัวหน้าฝ่ายคอมพิวเตอร์)
ระบบสารสนเทศเพื่อผู้บริหารใช้ตัวย่อว่า EIS (อ่านว่า อีไอเอส) หมาถึงการนำสารสนเทศหรือข้อมูลต่าง ๆ มาเก็บไว้ในรูปแบบที่ผู้บริหารมักจะต้องการใช้ และสามารถจะเรียกมาดู หรือใช้ได้สะดวก

เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศใช้ตัวย่อว่า IT หมายถึงเทคโนโลยีในการรวบรวมข้อมูล การจัดเก็บอย่างมีระบบ การเรียกหาข้อมูลได้อย่างรวดเร็ว การประมวลผล การวิเคราะห์ผลที่ได้จากการประมวลนั้น รวมไปถึงการเน้นในเรื่องการแสดงผล และประชาสัมพันธ์สารสนเทศนั้นอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ในรูปแบบที่เหมาะสมกับผู้ที่จะนำไปใช้ต่อไป ตลอดไปจนถึงการสื่อสารข้อมูลนั้นไปยังหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ด้วย ว่ากันว่า IT กำลังจะก้าวเข้ามาแทนวิชา MIS (management information system) เพราะมีขอบเขตกว้างขวางกว่ามาก สรุปสั้น ๆ ได้ว่า เป็นเหมือนการนำวิชาวิทยาการคอมพิวเตอร์ (computer science) รวมกับนิเทศศาสตร์ (mass communications)
ระบบการจัดการสารสนเทศใช้ตัวย่อว่า MIS อ่านว่า เอ็มไอเอส เป็นวิชาที่ว่าด้วยระบบการจัดการสารสนเทศ มีความหมายกว้าง ๆ ว่าเป็นการนำเอาข้อมูลมาประมวลผลให้เกิดเป็นความหมายที่จะทำให้เข้าใจได้ ซึ่งต้องใช้คอมพิวเตอร์เป็นหลัก เพราะทำได้รวดเร็วและทันต่อเหตุการณ์ เพื่อเสนอให้ผู้บริหารตัดสินใจได้เร็วขึ้น
