สำนักพิมพ์, Example:สำนักพิมพ์ (Publisher) คือ ผู้ที่จัดหาและคัดเลือกหนังสือ รวมทั้งสิ่งพิมพ์ประเภทต่าง ๆ ที่จะตีพิมพ์ กำหนดแนวทางหนังสือที่จะพิมพ์ วางมาตรฐานการพิมพ์ของหนังสือ การจัดหาผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิสำหรับตรวจอ่านต้นฉบับ กำหนดรูปเล่ม ราคา จำนวนพิมพ์ และอาจได้ลิขสิทธ์เป็นผู้พิมพ์จำหน่าย ประเภทของสำนักพิมพ์ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ สำนักพิมพ์ของเอกชน และ สำนักพิมพ์ของทางราชการ องค์การ สมาคม และหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ 1. สำนักพิมพ์ของเอกชน หมายถึง สำนักพิมพ์ที่มีเอกชนเป็นเจ้าของจัดดำเนินกิจการเพื่อธุรกิจการค้า สำนักพิมพ์บางแห่งอาจมีโรงพิมพ์เป็นของตนเอง เช่น บริษัทอมรินทร์พริ้นติ้งแอนด์พับลิชชิ่ง เป็นต้น สำนักพิมพ์ของเอกชน แบ่งออกเป็น 1.1 สำนักพิมพ์ทั่วไป หมายถึง สำนักพิมพ์ที่จัดพิมพ์หนังสือหลายประเภท หลายสาขาวิชา ส่วนมากเป็นสำนักพิมพ์ขนาดใหญ่ ตัวอย่างสำนักพิมพ์ทั่วไปในต่างประเทศ เช่น Doubleday, Harper and Row, Macmillan เป็นต้น ในประเทศไทย เช่น บริษัทอมรินทร์พริ้นติ้งแอนด์พับลิชชิ่ง บริษัทนานมีบุ๊คส์ บริษัทซีเอ็ดยูเคชั่น เป็นต้น 1.2 สำนักพิมพ์เฉพาะ หมายถึง สำนักพิมพ์ที่จัดพิมพ์หนังสือเฉพาะบางประเภท หรือเฉพาะสาขาวิชาใดวิชาหนึ่ง หรือหลายสาขาวิชาที่เกี่ยวข้องกัน เช่น ตำรา แบบเรียน หนังสือสาขาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี แพทยศาสตร์ ศิลปะ ดนตรี ประวัติศาสตร์ และแผนที่ เป็นต้น ตัวอย่างสำนักพิมพ์เฉพาะสาขาวิชาหรือประเภทของหนังสือที่จัดพิมพ์ในต่างประเทศ เช่น Elsevier B.V. สาขาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี 2. สำนักพิมพ์ของทางราชการ องค์การ สมาคม และหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเผยแพร่ความรู้ เผยแพร่ผลการปฏิบัติงาน แถลงนโยบาย และประชาสัมพันธ์หน่วยงาน สิ่งพิมพ์เหล่านี้มีทั้งจัดทำขึ้นเพื่อจำหน่าย หรือแจกจ่ายให้แก่บุคคล หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องหรือห้องสมุด แบ่งออกเป็น ๒ ประเภท คือ 2.1 สำนักพิมพ์มหาวิทยาลัย ส่วนใหญ่จัดพิมพ์ตำรา เอกสารประกอบการเรียน และสิ่งพิมพ์อื่น ๆ ของมหาวิทยาลัย 2.2 สำนักพิมพ์ของหน่วยราชการ หน่วยราชการในกระทรวง ทบวง กรม และหน่วยงานอื่น เช่น สถาบัน องค์การ และสมาคม บรรณานุกรม สำนักหอสมุดแห่งชาติ.
