การใช้ภาพเป็นตัวประสานกับผู้ใช้ใช้ตัวย่อว่า GUI (อ่านว่ากุย) เป็นวิธีการให้ความสะดวกแก่ผู้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ ให้ติดต่อสื่อสารกับเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์โดยผ่านทางภาพ เช่น ใช้เมาส์กดเลือกสัญรูป (icon) แทนการพิมพ์คำสั่งดังแต่ก่อน หรือการเลือกคำสั่งตามรายการเลือกที่เรียกว่า ระบบเมนู
ตัวประสานหมายถึง การเชื่อมต่อระหว่าง คอมพิวเตอร์ ที่ถ่ายโอนข้อมูลจากกันและกันได้ แต่มักนำมาใช้ในความหมายของ user interface ที่แปลว่า การติดต่อประสานระหว่างเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์กับผู้ใช้ เช่น แป้นพิมพ์, จอภาพ ต่างก็เป็นตัวประสานกับผู้ใช้ทั้งสิ้น
ส่วนต่อประสานกับผู้ใช้หมายถึง เครื่องหมายหรือสัญลักษณ์ ฯ ที่ทำหน้าที่เชื่อมประสานระหว่างผู้ใช้คอมพิวเตอร์กับตัวเครื่องในระบบfvl ก็มีสัญลักษณ์ > (prompt) ตัวชี้ตำแหน่ง (cursor) ถ้าเป็นระบบวินโดว์ ก็หมายถึง สัญรูป (icon) ถ้าเป็นฮาร์ดแวร์ ก็หมายถึง จอภาพ และเมาส์ (mouse)
