ต่อมหมวกไต มีส่วนประกอบ 2 ส่วน 1. ส่วนเปลือก (adrenal cortex) ทำหน้าที่สร้างฮอร์โมน 1.1 กลูโคคอร์ติคอยด์ แยกย่อยได้แก่ cortisone , hydrocortisone ซึ่งทำหน้าที่ในการเผาผลาญคาร์โบไฮเดรต ไขมัน และโปรตีน ทำให้จำนวนกลูโคสในเลือดเพิ่มขึ้น และไกลโคเจนจะถูกสะสมในตับมากขึ้น ดังนั้นจะเห็นว่าฮอร์โมนนี้จะทำหน้าที่ตรงข้ามกับ insulin ในขณะที่ร่างกายเครียดจะหลั่ง ACTH และ cortisoneออกมาโดยผ่านทาง higher center ของระบบประสาทส่วนกลาง เราจึงมักพบ cortisone ในสภาวะที่ร่างกายได้รับความเจ็บปวด ถูกของร้อน มีคม ไข้สูง ฯลฯ 1.2 ไมเนอราลคอร์ติคอยด์ แยกย่อยได่แก่ aldosterone deoxycorticosterone ซึ่งมีจำนวนน้อย ทั้งสองฮอร์โมนทำหน้าที่ควบคุมน้ำและเกลือแร่ 1.3 sex hormone แยกย่อยได้เป็น Estrogen Progesterone Androgen 2. ส่วนแกน (adrenal medulla) ทำหน้าที่ผลิตฮอร์โมนสำคัญคือ 2.1 adrenaline หรือ epinephrine ทำให้หัวใจเต้นแรง ความดันเลือดเพิ่มขึ้น เส้นเลือดที่ผิวหนังและอวัยวะภายในบีบตัว อัตราการหายใจเพิ่มขึ้น เร่งการสลาย glycogen ในตับเพื่อเปลี่ยนเป็น glucose ทำให้นเตาลในเลือดสูงขึ้น 2.2 noradrenaline ไม่มีผลต่อการเผาผลายอาหารในร่างกาย แต่มีผลทำให้เลือดหดตัว หัวใจเต้นช้าลง ความดันเลือดสุงขึ้น ขยายหลอดลม แต่ไม่มีผลต่อระดับ้ำตาลในเลือด
