อัตชีวประวัติ, อัตชีวประวัติ, Example:Autobiography หมายถึง อัตชีวประวัติ เป็นเรื่องราวชีวิตของบุคคลที่เขียนขึ้นโดยบุคคลคนนั้นเอง เนื้อหาของอัตชีวประวัติ อาจเล่าถึงชีวิตส่วนตัวที่ไม่มีใครเคยรู้มาก่อน หรือ ไม่เคยถูกเผยแพร่ที่ไหนมาก่อน โดยทั่วไปอยู่ในรูปของการเล่าเหตุการณ์ที่ผู้เขียนเห็นว่าสำคัญหรือน่าสนใจมากที่สุดที่คัดเลือกจากผู้ที่เต็มใจจะเปิดเผย คำว่า “อัตชีวประวัติ” ใช้เป็นครั้งแรกโดย โรเบิร์ต ซัทธีย์ (Robert Southey) ในปี ค.ศ. 1809 ส่วนอัตชีวประวัติที่เขียนอย่างสมบูรณ์เป็นครั้งแรกในศตวรรษที่ 4 มีชื่อว่า The Confessions เขียนโดยเซนต์ออกัสติน (Saint Augustine) อัตชีวประวัติบางเรื่องเจ้าของชีวประวัติเขียนให้เป็นนวนิยาย เช่น เรื่อง David Copperfield ของ ชาร์ลส์ ดิคเกนส์ (Charles Dickens) ในปัจจุบันอัตชีวประวัติของคนที่มีชื่อเสียงมักเขียนโดยเจ้าของชีวประวัติร่วมกับนักประพันธ์อาชีพในลักษณะบอกให้เขียน ซึ่งลักษณะการเขียนแบบนี้มีมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ ทั้งนี้นักเขียนชีวประวัติมักจะเขียนชีวประวัติจากเอกสารอ้างอิงต่างๆ และจากความคิดเห็นของตนเอง แต่นักเขียนอัตชีวประวัติเขียนชีวประวัติจากความทรงจำของตนเองทั้งหมด ซึ่งใกล้เคียงกับบันทึกความทรงจำ (Memoir) ที่บางครั้งแยกออกจากกันได้ยาก [บรรณารักษ์และสารสนเทศศาสตร์]
