วิธีการลงคะแนนเสียงในที่ประชุมสมัชชาสหประชาชาติ ในเรื่องนี้ สมาชิกแต่ละประเทศมีคะแนนเสียง 1 คะแนน ข้อมติของสมัชชาในปัญหาสำคัญ (Important Questions) จะกระทำโดยถือคะแนนเสียงข้างมาก 2 ใน 3 ของสมาชิกที่มาประชุมและออกเสียง ที่เรียกว่าปัญหาสำคัญนั้นได้แก่ ข้อเสนอแนะเกี่ยวกับการธำรงรักษาไว้ซึ่งสันติภาพและความมั่นคงระหว่างประเทศ การเลือกตั้งสมาชิกไม่ประจำของคณะมนตรีความมั่นคง การเลือกตั้งสมาชิกของคณะมนตรีเศรษฐกิจและการสังคม การเลือกตั้งสมาชิกของคณะมนตรีภาวะทรัสตี การรับสมาชิกใหม่ของสหประชาชาติ การงดใช้สิทธิและเอกสิทธิแห่งสมาชิกภาพ การขับไล่สมาชิก ปัญหาการดำเนินงานของระบบภาวะทรัสตี และปัญหางบประมาณ คำวินิจฉัยปัญหาอื่น ๆ รวมทั้งการกำหนดประเภทแห่งปัญหาที่จะต้องวินิจฉัยด้วยคะแนนเสียงข้างมาก 2 ใน 3 เพิ่มเติมนั้น จัดกระทำโดยอาศัยคะแนนเสียงข้างมากของสมาชิกที่มาประชุมและออกเสียงอนึ่ง ในการเลือกตั้งผู้พิพากษาของศาลยุติธรรมระหว่างประเทศ (ศาลโลก) ผู้ที่ได้รับเลือกตั้งจักต้องได้รับคะแนนเสียงข้างมากเด็ดขาด (Absolute majority) ในที่ประชุมของสมัชชาและในที่ประชุมของคณะมนตรีความมั่นคงด้วย นอกจากนี้สมาชิกสหประชาชาติที่ค้างชำระค่าบำรุงแก่องค์การ ย่อมไม่มีสิทธิ์ลงคะแนนเสียงในสมัชชา ถ้าหากจำนวนเงินที่ค้างชำระเท่าหรือมากกว่าจำนวนเงินค่าบำรุงที่ถึงกำหนด ชำระสำหรับ 2 ปีเต็มที่ล่วงมา อย่างไรก็ตาม สมัชชาอาจอนุญาตให้สมาชิกเช่นว่านั้นลงคะแนนเสียงก็ได้ ถ้าทำให้เป็นที่พอใจได้ว่า การไม่ชำระนั้น เนื่องมาจากภาวะอันอยู่นอกเหนืออำนาจควบคุมของสมาชิกนั้น [การทูต]
