ศัพท์ควบคุม, ศัพท์บังคับ, Example:ศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุม (Controlled vocabulary) หมายถึง การกำหนดให้คำศัพท์คำหนึ่งทำหน้าที่ควบคุมคำศัพท์หลายคำที่มีความหมายอย่างเดียวกัน เพื่อให้มีความเป็นมาตรฐาน ลดความกำกวม เป็นช่องทางหนึ่งในการจัดการความรู้ เป็นเครื่องมือในการเข้าถึงเนื้อหาหรือช่วยในการสืบค้นให้มีประสิทธิภาพ กล่าวคือ คำศัพท์บังคับคำเดียวสามารถเข้าถึงเอกสารได้จำนวนมาก แม้ว่าจะเอกสารนั้นจะเขียนด้วยศัพท์ภาษาที่แตกต่างกัน การใช้ศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุมนี้ เป็นการใช้ภาษาดรรชนี (Indexing language) ซึ่งแตกต่างจากภาษาหรือคำที่ผู้เขียนกำหนดขึ้นเอง ซึ่งเรียกว่า ภาษาธรรมชาติ (Natural language) ซึ่งมักจะปรากฏให้เห็นว่า มีคำเกิดขึ้นที่หลากหลาย ไม่เป็นแบบแผนเดียวกัน คำศัพท์บังคับ/ศัพท์ควบคุม ถูกใช้ในการกำหนดเป็นหัวเรื่อง ศัพท์สัมพันธ์ (อรรถาภิธาน) แทกโซโนมี ฯลฯ <p>ข้อดีของศัพท์บังคับ/ศัพท์ควบคุม <p>การกำหนดให้ใช้ศัพท์บังคับ/ศัพท์ควบคุม ในการเป็นตัวแทนเนื้อหาของสารสนเทศ เพื่อให้เกิดความเป็นมาตรฐานในการกำหนดคำที่เป็นตัวแทนของเนื้อหา เพื่อมิให้เนื้อหาเดียวกัน หรือมีความสัมพันธ์กระจัดกระจายไปตามคำศัพท์ที่มิได้เกิดจากการควบคุม ทั้งนี้ เพื่อประโยชน์ในการสืบค้นได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ เช่น หัวเรื่องภาษาอังกฤษของ Library of Congress Subject Headings จะมีการกำหนดคำที่ใช้แตกต่างกันระหว่างอเมริกาและอังกฤษ เช่น คำว่า color จะมีการกำหนดว่าให้ใช้คำว่า color ไม่ใช้ colour ซึ่งเมื่อสืบค้น ด้วยคำว่า color จะได้เนื้อหาที่มีการเขียนทั้งคำว่า color และ colour ได้อย่างครบถ้วน หรือคำว่า apartments จะถูกกำหนดให้ใช้ในการเป็นตัวแทนของเนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่องดังกล่าว แต่จะไม่ใช้คำว่า flats <p>ศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุมช่วยแก้ปัญหาคำพ้องรูป ซึ่งเป็นศัพท์ที่เขียนเหมือนกันแต่มีการใช้ต่างกัน (Homographs) เช่น คำว่า pool ความหมายหนึ่ง หมายถึง บ่อน้ำ สระน้ำ อีกความหมายหนึ่ง หมายถึง เกมชนิดหนึ่ง ดังนั้น ในการกำหนดศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุม จะมีคำขยายเพื่อให้ชัดเจนว่าหมายถึงเรื่องนั้น เช่น Pool (Game) หรือคำว่า เงาะ ซึ่งหมายถึง ผลไม้ชนิดหนึ่ง หรือชนกลุ่มน้อยก็ได้ คำว่า เงาะ ในการเป็นคำศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุม จึงหมายถึง ชื่อผลไม้ แต่ถ้าจะหมายถึง ชนกลุ่มน้อย จะมีการกำหนดให้ใช้เป็น เงาะ (กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์) <p>ศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุม ถูกนำมาใช้ในลักษณะที่เป็นหัวเรื่อง (Subject headings) หรือศัพท์สัมพันธ์ (Thesaurus) หัวเรื่องที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันดี คือ Library of Congress Subject Headings, Sear Subject Headings, Medical Subject Headings, Art & Architecture Thesaurus และ ERIC Thesaurus เป็นต้น <p>ตัวอย่าง Library of Congress Subject Headings ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้มีการนำลักษณะของศัพท์สัมพันธ์เข้ามาประยุกต์ใช้ในการกำหนดหัวเรื่องด้วย ทำให้เข้าใจความสัมพันธ์ของคำศัพท์ได้ดีขึ้น แม้ว่าจะไม่มีพื้นฐานความรู้ในสาขาวิชานั้นๆ <p><img src="http://www.thaiglossary.org/sites/default/files/20120527-Controlled-Vocab.jpg" alt="Controlled Vocabulary"> <p>ในประเทศไทยมีการกำหนดศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุมใช้เป็นคู่มือหัวเรื่องสำหรับการลงรายการทรัพยากรสารสนเทศภาษาไทย เช่นเดียวกัน เช่น หัวเรื่องและวิธีการกำหนดหัวเรื่องสำหรับวัสดุสารนิเทศภาษาไทยของสำนักหอสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ หัวเรื่องสำหรับหนังสือภาษาไทย โดย สมาคมห้องสมุดแห่งประเทศไทย และหัวเรื่องสำหรับหนังสือภาษาไทย ซึ่งจัดทำโดย คณะทำงานกลุ่มวิเคราะห์ทรัพยากรสารสนเทศ ห้องสมุดสถาบันอุดมศึกษา ในภายหลังได้มีการปรับปรุงการกำหนดคำศัพท์บังคับนี้เป็นแบบศัพท์สัมพันธ์เช่นเดียวกับของ Library of Congress Subject Headings <p>การกำหนดศัพท์บังคับหรือศัพท์ควบคุม จะดำเนินการโดยนักวิชาชีพ เช่น บรรณารักษ์ และนักเอกสารสนเทศ รวมทั้งผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละสาขา <p>บรรณานุกรม: <p>Library of Congress Classification Web.
