บทความหรือเอกสารทางวิชาการก่อนตีพิมพ์หรือเผยแพร่โดยผ่านกระบวนการประเมิน, Example:ในการเผยแพร่ผลงานทางวิชาการ Preprint ถือว่าเป็นฉบับร่างหรือเป็นฉบับก่อนที่ตีพิมพ์ หรือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของผลงานที่ยังไม่ได้ตีพิมพ์หรือเผยแพร่อย่างสมบูรณ์โดยผ่านกระบวนการประเมินโดยคณะกรรมการ (peer review) เนื่องจากในกระบวนการพิมพ์วารสารทางวิชาการต้องผ่านกระบวนการประเมินจากคณะกรรมการ ซึ่งใช้เวลาหลายสัปดาห์ หลายเดือน หรือบางทีอาจจะเป็นปี นับตั้งแต่การส่งผลงานนั้นเข้ามา ความต้องการในการเผยแพร่เอกสารออกไปโดยเร็วจึงรู้จักกันว่าเป็นฉบับ preprint โดยต้นฉบับก็ยังดำเนินการประเมินต่อไป บางสำนักพิมพ์อนุญาตให้นำเอกสารหรือบทความฉบับ Preprint เผยแพร่อย่างเสรีได้ในระบบ Open Access <img src="http://thaiglossary.org/sites/default/files/20120824-Preprint.jpg" width="540" higth="100" alt="Preprint"> จากรูปเป็นกระบวนการพิมพ์ ซึ่งจะเห็นว่า preprint อยู่ในส่วนต้นก่อนจะได้รับการเผยแพร่ รายการอ้างอิง Waaijiers, Ieo and Wesseling, Michel. 2009.
