ระบบปฏิบัติการใช้ตัวย่อว่า OS หมายถึง ซอฟต์แวร์ระบบ (systems software) ที่ทำหน้าที่ควบคุมการทำงานของฮาร์ดแวร์ทั้งหมด รวมทั้งการปฏิบัติงานของโปรแกรมด้วย เปรียบเสมือนเป็นแม่บ้าน ที่คอยดูแลให้อุปกรณ์ต่าง ๆ ทำงานประสานกัน ระบบปฏิบัติการของโมโครคอมพิวเตอร์ จะเรียกว่า ระบบปฏิบัติการแบบใช้จาน (disk operating systemหรือที่ใช้ตัวย่อว่า DOS) ที่มีชื่อโด่งดังอยู่ในขณะนี้ ก็คือ MS DOS (ใช้กับพีซี) และ System 7 (ใช้กับแมคอินทอช) หลังจากดอสแล้ว ก็มานิยมใช้ระบบวินโดว์แทน
