3. (Zool.) A handsome American butterfly (Euphydryas Phaëton syn. Melitæa Phaëton). The upper side of the wings is black, with orange-red spots and marginal crescents, and several rows of cream-colored spots; -- called also Baltimore. [ 1913 Webster ]
