graptolite

n. [ NL, Graptolithus, from Gr. &unr_; is engraved, written (gra`fein to write) + &unr_; stone. ] (Paleon.) One of numerous species of slender and delicate fossils, of the genus Graptolites and allied genera, found in the Silurian rocks.
