แพลงก์ตอน, Example:สิ่งมีชีวิตขนาดเล็กและใหญ่ที่ล่องลอยอยู่ใน น้ำ ไม่สามารถเคลื่อนไหวได้ ด้วยตัวเอง หรือเคลื่อนที่ด้วยตัวเองได้เพียงเล็กน้อย ส่วนใหญ่ต้องอาศัย กระแสน้ำและลมช่วยพัดพาไป แพลงก์ตอนมีการปรับตัวในด้านรูปร่างและ อวัยวะเป็นพิเศษ เพื่อให้เหมาะสมกับสภาพที่ต้องมีชีวิตล่องลอยอยู่ในน้ำได้ดี เช่น การลดขนาดของเซลล์ลง มีลำตัวกว้างแบน มีลักษณะเป็นแถบหรือเส้น บางชนิดมีหนามหรือระยางค์ แพลงก์ตอนส่วนใหญ่มีขนาดเล็ก และไม่สามารถมองเห็นได้ด้วยตาเปล่า แต่บางชนิดก็มีขนาดใหญ่ เช่น แมงกะพรุน เราสามารถแบ่งแพลงก์ตอนออกเป็น 2 กลุ่มใหญ่ๆ คือ Phytoplankton และ Zooplankton และยังอาจแบ่งตามลักษณะการดำรงชีวิตและวงจรชีวิตเป็น 2 กลุ่มใหญ่ๆ คือ Holoplankton และ Meroplankton [สิ่งแวดล้อม]
