n. (Computers) a data-storage medium consisting of a small plastic disk coated with a thin layer of magnetizable material on one or both sides, enclosed in a stiff envelope with a radial slit. It is used in a specially designed disk drive, in which the disk is rotated at high speed, and which stores data on the disk by causing changes in the direction of magnetization of the magnetic layer as the disk spins and as sequential locations on the disk pass under the read-write head of the drive. Reading of the data occurs in the reverse process, by detection of the patterns of magnetization of the disk. Such disks are used to store data or programs for a microcomputer.

แผ่นบันทึกหมายถึง จานบันทึกขนาดเล็ก เฉพาะที่ใช้กับไมโครคอมพิวเตอร์ มีลักษณะอ่อน จึงเรียกว่า แผ่นบันทึก บรรจุไว้ในซองกระดาษ ใช้เป็นที่เก็บข้อมูล เช่นเดียวกับจานบันทึกแม่เหล็ก ที่นิยมใช้กันในปัจจุบัน มีขนาด 5.25x5.25 นิ้ว มีความจุประมาณ 360 เคไบต์ (K byte) หรือ 360, 000 ตัวอักษร และ 1.2 เมกะไบต์ หรือ หนึ่งล้านสองแสนตัวอักษร บางทีเรียกกันว่า floppy disk นอกจากนั้น มีขนาด 3.5x3.5 นิ้ว บรรจุอยู่ในซองที่แข็งกว่า มีความจุประมาณ 720 เคไบต์ และ 1.44 เมกะไบต์ หรือ หนึ่งล้านสี่แสนตัวอักษร ในปัจจุบัน อาจใช้เก็บข้อมูลได้ทั้งสองหน้า ทำให้บรรจุข้อมูลได้มาก (เดิมบรรจุข้อมูลได้หน้าเดียว) หรือบางทีอาจทำให้ข้อมูลเบียดอัดมากขึ้น เรียกว่า double density (DD) ชนิดธรรมดาเรียกว่า single density (เดี๋ยวนี้ไม่มีแล้ว) และหากเก็บข้อมูลได้หน้าเดียว เรียกว่า single sided (SS) ซึ่งเดี๋ยวนี้ไม่มีแล้ว หากเก็บข้อมูลได้ทั้งสองหน้า เรียกว่า double sided (DS) แผ่นบันทึกชนิดที่มีความจุพิเศษ คือจุได้ถึง 1.2 ล้านตัวอักษรสำหรับแผ่น 5.25 นิ้ว และจุได้ 1.44ล้านตัวอักษรสำหรับแผ่น 3.5 นิ้ว เรียกว่า high density (HD) ดู disk ประกอบ
