ชื่อแฟ้ม (ข้อมูล) แฟ้มข้อมูลก็ดี โปรแกรมหรือชุดคำสั่งก็ดี จะต้องมีชื่อที่ ไม่ซ้ำกัน เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้ติดต่อสั่งงานกับคอมพิวเตอร์ได้เมื่อ ต้องการ เรียกใช้ระบบปฏิบัติการแต่ละระบบ จะมีข้อกำหนด กฎเกณฑ์ต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับการตั้งชื่อแฟ้มข้อมูลไว้ เป็นต้นว่า ระบบดอสและวินโดว์ มีข้อกำหนดว่า ชื่อของแฟ้ม ข้อมูล จะต้องยาวไม่เกิน 8 ตัวอักขระ (ตัวอักษรหรือตัวเลข) ต้องขึ้นต้นด้วยตัวอักษร ต้องไม่มีช่องว่าง ฯ และที่สำคัญที่สุด คือตั้งชื่อเป็นภาษาไทยไม่ได้โดยเด็ดขาด นอกจากนั้น อาจจะต้องมีนามสกุล (filetype) ซึ่งต้องประกอบด้วย 3 ตัวอักษร ส่วนระบบของแมคอินทอช มีข้อจำกัดน้อยกว่านั้น มาก เช่น จะใช้ภาษาไทยก็ได้
