หมายถึง สื่อต่าง ๆ ที่ใช้เป็นตัวเก็บข้อมูลเพิ่มจากหน่วยความจำหลัก (main memory) ในคอมพิวเตอร์ เช่น แถบบันทึก (tape) จานบันทึก (disk) เพราะราคาถูกกว่ามาก ถึงจะไม่เปิดไฟ ก็สามารถเก็บข้อมูลไว้ได้ หน่วยความจำหลักในคอมพิวเตอร์นั้นไม่มีที่พอจะนำข้อมูลจำนวนมาก ๆ เข้าไปเก็บไว้ได้หมด (ยิ่งมีขนาดใหญ่ ก็ยิ่งแพงมาก) เพื่อช่วยประหยัด เราอาจเก็บข้อมูลไว้ในหน่วยความจำรอง หรือหน่วยความจำช่วย (auxiliary storage) นี้ก่อน และจะดึงไปไว้ในหน่วยความจำหลักเฉพาะเมื่อเวลาต้องการเรียกใช้มีความหมายเหมือน external memory, secondary memory และ auxiliary storage
