On Westeros, the fantasy land where the epic story of Game of ThronesThey would say that today the day of his name is celebrated. Peter Dinklage turns 51 years old and we decided to dedicate these lines to celebrate it. The actor was able to obtain international recognition thanks to the phenomenon series of HBO, where he played the popular younger brother of the house Lannister, but He has been in the industry for almost thirty years, carefully selecting his roles.

Hand of the king, Counselor of the Currency and heir to Casterly Rock, the titles that his character accumulated were almost as many as his wise advice, which transcended the screen to end up on printed T-shirts and posters with motivational phrases. Already from the first season Tyrion Lannister became a favorite of the fans and the author of the saga of books on which the series is based, George R.R. Martin. And we can’t imagine another actor playing this role.

His role on the HBO series earned him four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.

But the race of Peter Dinklage started exactly two decades before the start of the series that would make him world famous, with small roles in film and television, in some of which he was not even credited. However, he continued to work persistently, both in theater and on screen, after graduating from drama school. The recognition came to him in 2003 when he starred The Station Agent (Crossroads), the debut of Tom McCarthy (winner of Oscar by Spotlight in 2013) which debuted at the Festival de Sundance.

Thanks to that role, his name received a nomination in the SAG Awards (the actors union awards) and His wide range and talent for dramatic comedy was demonstrated, which earned him roles of relative importance in movies like Surviving Eden (2004), Penelope (2006) and Death at a Funeral (2007), in addition to a regular character in the fourth season of Nip/Tuck, the series of Ryan Murphy. But it wouldn’t be until after Game of Thrones that offers would start pouring in to work in Hollywood tanks the size of X-Men and Avengers.

His wife is the screenwriter and director Erica Schmidt, with whom he has two children.

In addition, his growing popularity among the public led him to participate in iconic American TV programs such as Saturday Night Live and Sesame Street, and provided his voice for several animated films. In 2018 he produced and starred in the telefilm My dinner With Hervé, and after the controversial ending of Game of Thrones returned to the tables to perform a musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac in the key of rock. This play brought back some memories of his past as a member of a punk band in the nineties, which left a scar on his forehead after a show at the legendary CBGB’s.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Dinklage confessed (spoiler alert!) that he didn’t expect that Tyrion Lannister He made it to the end of the series alive and was really nervous when he received the script for the final season, as were the rest of his teammates. In the same report, He spoke about his dwarfism saying that he does not consider it a distinctive trait of his person, and that is why he is not interested in playing roles composed solely around that trait, which leads him to seek well-written scripts with complex characters.

Obviously we all work to get paid, but if you put money or fame ahead of the rest, then there is really no path to happiness.

He currently has several projects in the process of production, including an adventure film with his former castmate. Jason Momoa (who played Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones), where Peter Dinklage will play the famous vampire hunter By Helsing.

George Plimpton y The Paris Review

The French Chronicle it also has, logically, some The Paris Review, founded in the French capital by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen and Plimpton, who later became the prince of New Journalism, personal friend of John F. Kennedy, occasional actor, amateur athlete and on-and-off comedian. From 1953 to 1973, when it moved its headquarters to New York for logistical reasons, this influential four-month springboard for new voices in Anglo-Saxon letters published an interview section, Writer’s at Work, where titans like Dorothy Parker, Ezra Pound, Jorge Luis Borges, Saul Bellow or Joan Didion explained their technique. Anderson’s film is full of reflections on the always magical and intimidating act of observing life and turning it into words.

The Janet Flanner Diaries

Flanner worked for fifty years as a correspondent for the New Yorker in Paris, always under the pen name of Genêt. His diaries are, to this day, the main and most reliable source of information about how things were in the city before, during and after World War II. We talked about someone who celebrated Liberation by drinking at Les Deux Magots with his Lost Generation expat colleagues, meeting Picasso and Cocteau when they were starting out, recounting Lindbergh’s feat from across the Atlantic, recounting the Stavisky Affair first-hand, and she was among the exclusive friends of people like Gertrude Stein, ee cummings, or, of course, Hemingway. His highly personal style wasn’t just the gold standard all New York pens wanted to look like.It has also exerted a palpable influence on the voice-overs that usually narrate, always to the rhythm of Alexandre Desplat, Anderson’s films (in this case, that honor goes to Anjelica Huston). For example, this one hundred percent Genêt button: “The late Jean De Koven was the typical American tourist in Paris, except for two exceptions: she never set foot in the Opéra and was murdered.”

Luc Sante

We’re sorry to use this name, as Lucy Sante just announced her transition a couple of months ago via Instagram. In any case, we refer to the author of Underworld: A New York Mythology (1991) and The mob of Paris (2015, both published in Spain by Libros del KO), two non-fiction volumes that inspire the short travel chronicle starring Owen Wilson. His character, Herbsaint Sazerac, also takes on traits of Joseph Mitchell, conjurer of creative journalism and author of the unsurpassed report Mr. Hunter’s Grave (1956), and the photographer Bill Cunningham, another poet of the streets with love for his bicycle and airs of flâneur.

The clear line

The Wilson excerpt also evidences something that movies like Travel to Darjeeling (2007) the El gran hotel in Budapest (2014) were already advancing: that Anderson’s visual style owes an ever-growing debt to Hergé, Ted Benoit, Edgar P. Jacobs, Bob de Moor and other representatives of the Franco-Belgian comic. The flawless clear line from The French Chronicle is enhanced by Angouleme architecture, and the result is quite close to a Tintin adventure adapted to four hands by Jacques Tati from Playtime (1967) and the Louis Malle of The wisp (1963).

Rosamond Bernier

Tilda Swinton makes another of her creations, but this time on a royal basis. Co-founder of the magazine The eye, Frida Kahlo’s teenage student, editor of Vogue, responsible for a popular series of lectures on the history of art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the author of at least a couple of memoirs full of salacious details about artists such as Matisse and Miró, Bernier is one of those personalities that you simply cannot finish . In 1975 she married the critic of the New York Times John Russell: The liaison took place in Philip Johnson’s Glass House and Leonard Bernstein led it down the aisle. In 1999, Juan Carlos I awarded him the cross of the Royal Order of Isabel la Católica for his contributions to Spanish culture. Swinton was born to play this woman, even though she is called JKL Berensen in the movie.

Boudu saved from the waters (1932)

The prison painter brought to life by Benicio del Toro could remember, in a certain sense, the artist outsider Adolf Wölfli, who produced the bulk of his production from his cell at the Waldau Clinic (Bern, Switzerland), but this time Anderson preferred to rely on a fictional character: the tramp played by Michel Simon in this classic by Jean Renoir. His love story with the jailer played by Léa Seydoux has, on the other hand, streaks of Little Lise (Jean Grémillon, 1930), David Golder (Julien Duvivier, 1931) and other semi-unknown classics of Gallic cinema, as well as in other more famous roles of Simon: The gulf (Renoir, 1931) and The atalante (Jean Vigo, 1934).

The Days of Duveen (1951)

The basis for Julien Cadazio, the art dealer played by Adrien Brody in the first story, is found in a profile of Joseph Duveen written by SN Behrman for the New Yorker. Baron Duveen is an absolutely perfect figure to reflect on the relationship between art and commerceespecially with regard to the introduction of great European masterpieces in the United States. But! He was also a rogue and a fraud, for today we know that several of his priceless jewels were, in fact, forgeries.

Mavis Gallant

There is no doubt that Lucinda Krementz, the character of Frances McDormand, is born directly from the chronicles that Gallant, sent from the trenches in May 68. Not only that, but this Canadian writer based in France also sent to the New Yorker a chronicle in two parts (entitled The Events in May: A Paris Notebook) from which Anderson, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman have extracted quite a bit of juice. In any case, there is also some Lillian Ross in Krementz, especially with regard to his frank cynicism and his fights with that entelechy known as “journalistic objectivity.”

Male, female (1966)

The second story is very, very Godardian, with explicit nods to this romantic-ideological drama that its own author christened “The Sons of Karl Marx and Coca-Cola.” In fact, Timothée Chalamet and Lyna Khoudri have a discussion at one point about whether commercial music and the Frankfurt School can share space in the revolution. Sometimes, Anderson removes the spotlight from the Nouvelle Vague to put it in the Cinèma du Look by Besson, Beineix and the first Leos Carax, thus creating a more than interesting dialogue between generations.

Christophe

Your success Aline covers the second panel from cover to cover, only in a new version recorded expressly for the film by Jarvis Cocker. The musician, who had already collaborated with Anderson on Fantástico Mr. Fox (2009), was so pleased with his cover of Christophe who, attention, has recorded a whole album under the personality of Tip-Top, a false idol of the song who looks a lot like his thirty-something self. Inside, more classics from Hardy, Gainsbourg or Dutronc await us, to name just a few names.

Paris underworld (1952)

The third part of The French Chronicle is Anderson’s great tribute to two of his passions: preparing food and policemen by Jacques Becker, also author of Don’t touch the pasta (1954) the Evasion (1960), to name just two that, in some way, also appear in the film. If the picturesque association of criminals and prostitutes led by Edward Norton is very Paris, underworld, there are times when the underworld of cops and robbers deployed in The French Chronicle remember to The killer lives in 21 (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1941) and, furthermore, the novels of commissioner Maigret, many of them brought to the big screen by authors like Renoir or Julien Duvivier.

James Baldwin

Yes, the literary-gastronomic critic with a typographic memory embodied by Jeffrey Wright (who was already taking a long time to join the troupe andersoniana) has much of Baldwin, an African-American man of letters who dedicated most of his production (in formats as diverse as poetry, novel, essay or theater) to reflect on the limits of self-acceptance in a hostile society. In Wright’s sensational performance we also detect some James Thurber, who also boasted of his ability to remember any detail of his work, and even AJ Liebling.

Charles Marville

Finally, let’s highlight the debt that The French Chronicle It has with the so-called “Paris photographer”, whose clinical eye for real-time urban transformations bequeathed us a visual chronicle of how Baron Haussmann buried an old city to give birth to a much more dazzling, new and vigorous. Or, at least, that’s the theory: Marville’s camera witnessed how large-scale modernization helped widen social divisions that did not disappear on the Haussmannian map, but simply moved to other spaces. Anderson manages to convey that almost psychogeographic streak in his vision of Enniu as an organic and living Whole, where pissoirs, the alleys, the demolished buildings and the rats of the subway connect with the apartments of the high society, the prisons, the art galleries, the universities and the police stations, as they are described to us in stories-within-stories-within -of-stories about a world in perpetual metamorphosis, but where constants such as beauty, passion, sadness or vulgarity continue to show us why it is worth living… and writing about it, if not what is the point of it.

Right on the eve of the Eternals red carpet premiere, we learned that Disney delayed many MCU movies, delaying releases by several months. The surprise delay affected all the MCU movies of the next year. That includes the highly anticipated delay of the release of Doctor Strange 2. Kevin Feige explained it during interviews at the premiere, saying that it was all due to production issues. He said we would have to wait a few more months for the MCU movies to come out, not to mention distribution changes or the pandemic. Previous reports said that Disney will not change the launch focus by returning to a day-and-date model it tested with Black Widow.

But then a rumor surfaced revealing the possible reason why Marvel had to delay Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and all the MCU stories for next year. If this report is accurate, Marvel fans should be delighted with the delay of Doctor Strange 2. Be careful, a multiverse of spoilers follows below.

The Many Multiverse Leaks of Insanity

Marvel filmed most of Doctor Strange 2 in early 2021, with the remakes taking place over the summer. The film originally had a release date of March 25, 2022, or three months after the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Both films are adventures from various universes that can be directly connected. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) appears in both.

With all of that in mind, we weren’t surprised to see the Multiverse of Madness plot leaks pick up steam in recent weeks. We even saw a full plot leak that revealed everything about the movie. We think we know who the main villain is, how the action unfolds, and how the movie ends. The leak also mentioned most of the big cameos.

We won’t repeat any of those huge spoilers now. But the point is, the leaks made more sense than any 2020 Doctor Strange 2 leak for the reasons above. The film is already in post-production ahead of its release, so details have been finalized.

This brings us to the new rumor that explains why Marvel decided to push Doctor Strange back into the Multiverse of Madness. Again, I will mention that some big spoilers will follow below.

The delay of the release of Doctor Strange 2

The pandemic and box office performance could be constant concerns for Disney and Marvel. But these may not be the biggest reasons for delaying the entire 2022 MCU movie roster. Again, when Marvel has to delay an MCU title, this affects all MCU Phase 4 release plans because all of these projects are interconnected.

According to well-informed YouTuber Grace Randolph, the test audiences identified story issues with No Way Home and Doctor Strange 2 that might need fixing.

Randolph explained that he’s hearing that they are both “kitchen sink” movies. The test audiences felt that both stories needed more work. It may be too late for Spider-Man, but the YouTuber notes that Sony’s movie could see its own delay. On top of that, both films are “until the last minute” when it comes to visual effects. And Marvel is working to “very tight and stressful deadlines.”

Marvel still has time to fix the Doctor Strange 2 story. Randolph said Marvel is giving Multiverse of Madness extensive footage. It is not just about solving the problems of the story, “but about adding many more characters.” Marvel executives reportedly felt they were “too light on Easter eggs to please fans. This is supposed to be the Multiverse of Madness, not the Multiverse of Meh.

The incredible cameos of Doctor Strange 2

In early 2020, we heard all sorts of crazy Doctor Strange 2 rumors. This was long before the movie was released, at a time when Marvel hadn’t even started filming it. Those rumors offered wild cameo claims that included Deadpool, Wolverine, and other X-Men, and a version of Iron Man.

The late 2021 cameo rumors are quite different for the reasons we explained above. Marvel completed most of the movie, so people have had access to current information. The leaks I mentioned earlier gave us some exciting cameos for the film, including a prominent X-Men member from the Fox universe who could lead the Illuminati in the MCU.

Without naming names, Randolph says his sources have confirmed some of the leaks. “There are some great characters that are going to appear as part of the Illuminati,” he said.

The YouTuber added that Multiverse of Madness will continue to play as a Doctor Strange movie rather than an Avengers crossover. But Marvel apparently decided it needs more characters, so it’s bringing them in. In turn, new recordings will delay post-production work. And that’s why the release of Doctor Strange 2 was supposedly delayed.

What about Loki?

Speaking of exciting cameos, Murphy’s Multiverse updated their post on the future of MCU Phase 4 with the new release date. The Doctor Strange 2 section still mentions Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as one of the surprise cameos in the movie. We’ve always hoped to see Loki in the movie, but the detailed plot leak we saw recently didn’t mention this character. Loki is partly responsible for the messiness of the multiverse, which is something Strange doesn’t know yet. However, Randolph does not mention the God of Mischief. And Murphy’s post isn’t enough to confirm Hiddleston’s involvement with the project.

Finally, there is another reason to consider when looking at the release schedule for this movie. Marvel needs time to promote it. Due to its ties to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel may not be able to release an actual trailer before the Spider-Man movie opens in theaters. This would be done to avoid spoiling the secrets of No Way Home.

This is already here. The 91st edition of the Oscars is finally held this Sunday, February 24 after a long, quite unpredictable and above all controversial Oscar run. With three out of four categories analyzed, the last one is missing, that of Best Leading Actor, where Rami Malek is an Oscar favorite for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

It must be assumed that the Oscar is by Rami Malek at all levels, both statistical and professional. Except for Critics’ Choice, he has grabbed every major award of the season, dealing a fatal stab at his rivals with the recent BAFTA. His performance has delighted the voters and is something about which there is unanimity. Plus, it has survived an awkward statement and would be a social gain for what Freddie Mercury stands for.

Now, Rami Malek, like everything that surrounds the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, has the enemy at home: Bryan Singer. That a film by a director accused of pedophilia is going to be awarded is something that Hollywood rejects without hesitation. Therein lie the only options for Christian Bale, the main loser of the season after looking like a favorite in November and after winning the Critics’. Bale is in a movie that he has liked a lot, but he embodies an ‘unacceptable’ character to be awarded (something that can also happen to Amy Adams). It’s unfair, but it’s that real.

Bradley Cooper he is expectant of all these chess movements. The hard blow he suffered when he was not nominated for Best Director made him reconsider and think about a possible victory here given the little strength that his film had left in the premier category. His Jackson Maine is a beautiful character, broken, worn, but with that anarchic talent that only geniuses have. Three critical awards turn out to be very few considering the work Cooper does, and unfortunately they revert him to little chance of winning. If the Academy decides to return the ugly in the director category by feeling in debt, it could win, but it is a chimera.

Nominated for Best Leading Actor at the Oscars 2019: Oscar Favorite Rami Malek

In fourth place is the one who should be the winner of the night. One of the best performances of the shortlist is signed in ‘Green Book’ by the actor Viggo Mortensen. Mortensen’s third nomination comes from a violent, racist and rude character that Mortensen manages to project touching. He has only enjoyed one victory all season, that of the National Board of Review, and his nomination this year is similar to that of two years ago with ‘Captain Fantastic’: he is in the short list after a great job, but he does not go to win. The day will come when Mortensen can really fight.

The fifth nominee is always a mystery, since the Oscars’ acting categories are generally not as closed as Best Picture or Best Original Screenplay. That is why there are surprises like that of Marina de Tavira in secondary school or that of Willem Dafoe here. The Wisconsin native managed to beat the season’s most awarded actor, Ethan Hawke, or other perhaps more favorites like John David Washington. His role as Vincent Van Gogh was only honored by the Satellite Awards, but Dafoe has a lot of respect in the industry at 63 and over after coming close to winning last year with ‘The Florida Project’. He should be content with the nomination, but he is another who will surely be a frontrunner for years to come.

It is Rami Malek not against Christian Bale, but against the controversial Bryan Singer. If you have really managed to forget this black chapter of the season for the film, Malek has the Oscar engraved with his name. Otherwise, Christian Bale would practically fall into his hands, while Bradley Cooper miraculously hopes that he will change the trajectory of that fall in his favor and Viggo Mortensen and Willem Dafoe look resigned without even touching the award. The new one not against veterans, but against controversy.

The Paranormal Activity franchise completely rejuvenated the horror genre, ushering in the era of paranormal horror and leading the way for films like Insidious, The Conjuring, and more. Before the original’s release, horror was knee-deep in the “torture porn” era, where graphic franchises like SAW and Hostel were dominating pop culture.

When Paranormal Activity was released, however, it was the exact opposite. Instead of showing intense gore, the true horror came from what audiences didn’t see…a lurking demonic force that could be anywhere at any time. The series has since produced seven films, including the most recent, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, arriving on Paramount+.

7 Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015) – Stream On Paramount+

A young girl enters a portal to the "ghost dimension" in Paranormal Activity The Ghost Dimension

The franchise’s biggest misstep was 2015’s The Ghost Dimension. By this point, the main story had been completed and new plotlines were being created to keep the series going. The Ghost Dimension thought it would switch things up by letting audiences finally see the ghostly activity…including a neon-infused glittery portal to the “other side.” Though the concept was novel, it was in no way scary.

This naturally didn’t work because the horror of Paranormal Activity came from not seeing what was happening. The series was popular because the lack of visual effects kept it filled with an endless sense of tension. The Ghost Dimension was panned by critics and audiences, currently holding a pitiful 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.

6 Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) – Stream On Paramount+

The demonic possession begins to turn Oscar into a demonic Monster in The Marked Ones

Another film that took place after the conclusion of the original storyline was The Marked Ones. This time, the movie centered around a group of teenagers in Southern California who sneak into the apartment of a recently deceased witch. Before long, paranormal activity begins to happen all around them, and some of the teens start to become possessed.

Once again, the film broke the golden rule of the franchise and showed too much. The Marked Ones included superhuman strength, teleportation, levitation, and more, all requiring CGI effects that simply don’t work with the gritty, found-footage style of the franchise.

5 Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) – Stream On Paramount+

Someone, or something, underneath a sheet lurks in the family household

The third installment served as a prequel to the first two films, explaining the origins of how the demonic entity came into Katie and Kristi’s lives. For the most part, the film wasn’t bad. It had its scary moments, including a few brilliant scenes that take place in the home’s first floor using a camera that slowly rotates from left to right between the living room and kitchen. With each rotation, the camera reveals something new (and usually terrifying).

The movie was also tasked with a tough job: providing backstory to a tale of demonic possession. The franchise chose to introduce a coven of witches to explain this, which, wasn’t exactly scary. Plus, it hindered the feeling of isolation from the first two films by adding in more human characters. Despite this, it had some genuinely scary moments.

4 Paranormal Activity 4 (2012) – Stream On Hulu

Hunter stands in front of the Xbox Kinect, sensing something is watching him

2011’s Paranormal Activity 4 took place around seven years after the first two films. Now fully into the witch coven plotline, the movie needed to bring two storylines together: Further explaining the witch coven, while also introducing a new series of hauntings. Storywise, the movie did the best it could, but certainly wasn’t perfect.

However, the film brought in some excellent scares, including an ingenious use of the Xbox 360’s Kinnect device, which produces tons of dots that fill up the room thanks to its infrared sensor. While invisible to the naked eye, cameras in night vision mode can see them. This created tons of new and terrifying moments in Paranormal Activity 4, giving the movie a fresh feel.

3 Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021) – Stream On Paramount+

An entity bumps around a dark room, leaving Margot frightened

Set during the pandemic, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is the franchise’s newest addition. Its story centers around an adopted girl and her friends who visit an Amish community where her birth mother used to live. Not long after arriving, it’s discovered that this is no ordinary Amish community, and is instead a devil-worshipping cult.

Still filmed in the found-footage style, the movie adds a new story and vibe to the Paranormal Activity franchise and serves as a great way to revamp the series. The movie’s scariest scenes take place in a hollowed-out well, which is used for sacrifices. The narrow caverns and utter darkness leads to tons of great jump scares and constant tension.

2 Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) – Stream On Starz

Katie returns after becoming possessed in Paranormal Activity 2

After the runaway success of the first film, a sequel soon followed. The movie takes place slightly before, congruently with, and just after the first film. It’s a brilliant plot device that continues to make Paranormal Activity 2 feel smart and classic. The film follows Kristi, Katie’s sister, and her family.

One of the most terrifying settings in the film was the house’s basement. As everyone who grew up with one knows…they were a constant source of horror as kids. Dark, quiet, and mysterious, basements naturally envoke fear, making it the perfect new setting for the sequel. Paranormal Activity 2 is so brilliant because it was able to equal (and at times, surpass) the fear level of the original film, something that isn’t easy for horror sequels to do.

1 Paranormal Activity (2007/2009) – Stream On Starz

Katie and Micah awaken to hear footsteps entering their bedroom at night

Though not released in theaters until 2009, Paranormal Activity actually had a two-year journey beforehand in select screenings across the country. Beginning in 2007, the movie premiered at a few film festivals, followed by screenings on select college campuses around America. By 2009, online horror communities were buzzing about Paranormal Activity, calling it the scariest movie in decades.

In October of that year, the film got its wide release. Shot in the found-footage style, the movie chronicled a couple’s battle against a demonic haunting. What made Paranormal Activity so powerful was that the demon is never seen. Instead, the movie keeps viewers guessing, unaware of what might be behind the strange events. The endless edge-of-your-seat anticipation proved to be wildly successful and the movie grossed almost $200 million at the box office, on a budget of just $230,000. Paranormal Activity has since been named one of the scariest movies of all time.

Steve Howey has told Sky Sports News (20/10, 11:39) he believes Newcastle United’s new owners were right to appoint Graeme Jones as interim head coach after firing Steve Bruce.

The Magpies announced on Wednesday that Bruce had left his position by mutual consent after 27-months in charge. Newcastle sit 19th in the Premier League table as one of three sides yet to win a fixture this term. They have also conceded more goals (19) than any side.

Bruce’s position as Newcastle’s manager came under increasing threat as Mike Ashley sold the club to a Saudi-led consortium. Sky Sports reported ahead of the takeover by the Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers that they would fire Bruce.

Newcastle have now moved on from Bruce with assistant coach Jones given he reigns until a permanent manager is hired. Talks took place with Paulo Fonseca last week, per the Daily Mail. While the Daily Star claim Eddie Howe is interested in taking charge at St James’ Park.

Howey backs Newcastle hiring Jones to replace Bruce on interim basis

Howey, who played for Newcastle between 1989 and 1999, believes the consortium were right to hire Jones as caretaker boss to move on from Bruce while seeking his replacement.

Your Club’s Player Who Newcastle ‘WILL SIGN’

“I think [it was the right call],” Howey said. “The fans have been reasonably impressed with Graeme since he come in. You do see him being a lot more prominent on the touchline, on the training ground. Obviously, again, he’s a Newcastle lad, he’s a Newcastle supporter.

“The new owners have obviously sounded people out [on replacing Bruce] before making this decision. That’s possibly why they haven’t made the decision straight away. I think that would have been a bit rash to come in [and fire Bruce], even though Newcastle fans were a little bit impatient that the decision wasn’t made earlier.

“But I think Graeme has got the respect of the players in the dressing room and it will be interesting to see how they react against Crystal Palace. But ultimately, fans will be waiting with bated breath for who it is that will take over [permanently].”

What will Jones offer Newcastle until permanent manager is hired?

Interim Newcastle manager Jones has previous experience from his time in charge at Luton as he prepares to replace Bruce. The 51-year-old also worked as an assistant for the Belgian national side, West Brom and Bournemouth, and worked with England this summer.

Jones joined Newcastle as Bruce’s assistant in January and The Athletic note he instantly offered fresh ideas at Darsley Park. Figures inside and outside of United also recognise the positive lift his arrival last winter delivered during a relegation fight.

Additionally, Jones has been crucial to Newcastle’s development throughout 2021 through his work overseeing training. He was also pivotal to the introduction of a 4-3-1-2 formation that helped stave off relegation under Bruce last season. While having the players’ respect should help Jones replace Bruce, who the Daily Mail claim had lost the dressing room.

In “Queens,” Eve and Brandy look back at the ’90s; in “The Boys,” Ron and Clint Howard return to “Happy Days”; and in “Invasion,” Simon Kinberg (sort of) returns to “The War of the Worlds.” Here’s where to stream it all:

(Apple TV+)

Invasion,” a new 10-part sci-fi drama that premieres Friday on Apple TV+, is the story of an alien invasion that focuses a microscope on the lives of different characters around the world reacting to an existential crisis. If that sounds similar to H.G. Wells’s “The War of the Worlds,” well, that’s no accident.

Writer, executive producer and co-creator Simon Kinberg says that he originally sold the project to Apple as an adaptation of the book, which was famously brought to radio by Orson Welles. Mr. Kinberg says he wanted to bring “the level of reality that he brought to that radio play” to the screen. But as he started building out the story and the characters, he realized what he had in mind wasn’t “The War of The Worlds,” but a new story with a similar premise.

Mr. Kinberg has worked with some of the biggest pieces of intellectual property in Hollywood, from “X-Men” to “Star Wars.” But he felt that to call his series “The War of the Worlds” would be promising something that it wasn’t. Plus, he believes audiences are in the mood for something new.

“I’ve made movies based on comic books and bestselling books, and it’s a wonderful sort of guarantee, to some extent, as much as anything can ever be guaranteed,” he says. “But I do think that we are reaching maybe a saturation point where people want original material.”

New Release: ‘Queens’

(ABC, Hulu)

There are parts of 1999, the year she released her hit debut album “Let There Be Eve … Ruff Ryders’ First Lady,” that Eve doesn’t remember.

“I smoked a lot of weed back then,” she said with a laugh in an interview.

These days, the rapper turned actress and former co-host of “The Talk” says rather than spend, say, Sunday mornings hung over, she spends them in bed with her husband and dog trying to figure out who’s going to make breakfast.

In ABC’s new one-hour drama, “Queens,” she plays a rapper whose life has taken a similarly domesticated turn. Eve’s Brianna is a former member of a ’90s hip-hop group, Nasty Bitches, who has become a wife and mother. She and her band mates reassemble after a young rapper samples one of their hits and brings the group back into the zeitgeist. The series joins Peacock’s “Girls5Eva” as at least the second series released in 2021 about a ‘90s group that reassembles after a young rapper samples one of their old hits.

Alongside Eve, the cast includes Brandy, another ’90s hit maker; Naturi Naughton, formerly of the R&B group 3LW; and Nadine Velazquez.

Eve says that when she was considering the role, she had to remind herself that she would be portraying a character, not herself, despite the similarities. But sometimes on set, she says she couldn’t share the parallels between her life and the life of Brianna.

“Some days when it does happen,” she says, “it is pretty spooky.”

New Release: ‘The Boys’

(Amazon, Apple Books)

The Boys” tells the story of Rance and Jean Howard, an aspiring actor and his wife, who leave the shrinking live-TV world of New York for Hollywood in 1958, hoping to land roles in westerns and detective shows. In California, the pair find themselves supporting their sons as their screen careers take off. The book is written—and the audiobook is read by—the boys themselves: Ron Howard, who became both Opie on “The

Andy Griffith

Show” and the director of films like “Cocoon” and “A Beautiful Mind,” and Clint Howard, a character actor who has appeared in films like “Austin Powers” and “The Waterboy.”

The story of the Howard family parallels the history of TV and film in ways that few family histories can. Ron Howard said he wanted to let readers in on his view of some of the ways the industry has changed, while also marveling at how much has stayed the same.

“The angst around the creative decision-making, problem-solving process, the goal of trying to connect an idea … with an audience, these things have not really shifted,” he said in a recent interview alongside his brother, adding: “You’re trying to tell a story in a compelling way that speaks to an audience in that moment, and then hopefully resonates beyond the day, week, month, or year the project is first seen.”

Clint Howard said the big-picture approach is one way he and his brother differ.

“Ron, you always have been kind of a big-picture guy,” he said in the interview, “and I just sort of said, No: I think the reader of ‘The Boys’ wants to know about Clint, and I’m gonna give ’em Clint.”

“The Last Duel” lost the battle at the box office over the weekend, but can it win the war at the Oscars? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are discuss that, the new “Being the Ricardos” teaser and more.

Ridley Scott‘s medieval epic made a paltry $4.8 million over the weekend, which is obviously not great, but how much will box office matter in the race for gold in a COVID world? We both liked “The Last Duel,” which got good reviews, recovering from a tepid response at the Venice Film Festival last month, with strong notices for Jodie Comer and scene-stealer Ben Affleck. However, neither of us is ready to put one of our favorite Bostonians into our Best Supporting Actor lineups yet — for this film at least.

SEE Oscar Experts Typing: Has Ben Affleck raised the ‘Bar’ to ‘Duel’ for Best Supporting Actor?

Chris still has Affleck winning for his other film, “The Tender Bar,” which arrives in theaters Dec. 17 and on Amazon on Jan. 7. But does the George Clooney flick have nomination potential outside of Affleck? The Long Island-set movie was not filmed on Long Island, and as two people from that area, we have lots of thoughts.

Amazon’s other star-studded player this season is “Being the Ricardos,” the teaser for which finally arrived on Tuesday. The clip does not show Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball, save for a brief glimpse of her stomping grapes as Lucy Ricardo — is this a good or bad choice from a marketing standpoint for a project that has taken some punches for not completely transforming Kidman and Javier Bardem to look like Ball and Desi Arnaz, respectively? And fresh off six-time nominee “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” can Aaron Sorkin deliver another contender or will this go the way of “Steve Jobs” and just pull an acting nomination or two?

Elsewhere, we discuss two of this weekend’s releases that were supposed to have come out last year, “Dune” and “The French Dispatch,” and how the anticipation for each has changed since 2020.
