“Our paper highlights the mosaic of more than 3,600 active and abandoned mines sitting amongst some of the most valuable fish habitat in western North America,” said Chris Sergeant, an FLBS research scientist and the paper’s lead author. “The largest of these mines processes around 160,000 metric tons of earth every day.”

Sergeant said not all mines pose the same level of risk, but their review revealed that harm from mining can be severe and long-lasting. The extent of mining pressures on these watersheds underscores the importance of accurately assessing risk to water, fish and communities.

The study reviewed the ecological complexity of rivers and how mines can impact culturally and economically important fish species such as salmon by contaminating waters with heavy metals, burying stream habitat and diverting water for processing ore. When not managed properly, these cumulative impacts can be impossible to reverse and degrade landscapes for decades to centuries.

“Unfortunately, in some cases, we are learning the hard way that mines can have profound impacts on aquatic ecosystems, leaching far down the watershed from the actual mine site, at scales that were not anticipated in the original impact assessment,” said Erin Sexton, a paper co-author and FLBS senior scientist. “For example, impacts from the Elk Valley coal mining complex in southeast British Columbia have been documented over 155 miles downstream of the mines, crossing the U.S.-Canada international boundary.”

The authors emphasize that up-to-date and transparent science has an important role to play in managing the potential impacts of mines. Emerging science on salmonid ecology, cumulative effects and how climate change is altering these landscapes can improve risk assessment of mines.

The authors highlighted four key issues that will be foundational to modern, science-based risk assessment and mitigation: understanding stressor complexity and uncertainty, accounting for cumulative effects of mining activities across a mine’s life cycle, developing realistic mitigation strategies and recognizing the potential for climate change to magnify risk.

“Emerging science is revealing the complex realities of how salmon watersheds work in this era of climate change and also the many different risk pathways posed by mines,” said co-author Jonathan Moore of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. “Informed decision-making will need risk assessments that embrace these challenging topics, ranging from cumulative effects to climate change.”

While a low-carbon future will depend to some extent on mined minerals, it is important to consider whether current and future mining projects are operated in such a way that protects fish, water and well-functioning watersheds.

In a new study, published today in the journal Science Advances, researchers from China, the USA and the UK, reveal how life in the sea recovered from the event, which killed over 90 percent of species on Earth, from their observations of trace fossils.

Life was devastated by the end-Permian mass extinction 252 million years ago, and recovery of life on Earth took millions of years for biodiversity to return to pre-extinction levels. But by examining trails and burrows on the South China sea bed, the international team were able to piece together sea life’s revival by pinpointing what animal activity was happening when.

Professor Michael Benton from the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences, a collaborator on the new paper, said: “The end-Permian mass extinction and the recovery of life in the Early Triassic are very well documented throughout South China.

“We were able to look at trace fossils from 26 sections through the entire series of events, representing seven million crucial years of time, and showing details at 400 sampling points, we finally reconstructed the recovery stages of all animals including benthos, nekton, as well as these soft-bodied burrowing animals in the ocean.”

Dr Xueqian Feng from the China University of Geosciences in Wuhan led the study, and his focus was on ancient burrows and trails. He explained: “Trace fossils such as trails and burrows document mostly soft-bodied animals in the sea. Most of these soft-bodied animals had no or poor skeletons.

“There are some amazing localities in South China where we find huge numbers of beautifully preserved trace fossils, and the details can show infaunal ecosystem engineering behaviours, as well as their feedback effects on biodiversity of skeletonized animals.”

Professor Zhong-Qiang Chen, director of the study, said: “The trace fossils show us when and where soft-bodied, burrowing animals flourished in this Early Triassic greenhouse world.

“For example, elevated temperatures and extended anoxia coincided with low values of behavioural and ecologic diversities across the Permian-Triassic boundary, and it took about 3 million years for ecological recovery of soft-bodied animals to match the pre-extinction levels.”

Professor David Bottjer, a collaborator in the study from the University of Southern California, added: “One of the most remarkable aspects of the South China data is the breadth of ancient environments we could sample.

“Differential responses of infaunal ecosystems to variable environmental controls may have played a significant but heretofore little appreciated evolutionary and ecologic role in the recovery in the hot Early Triassic ocean.”

Dr Chunmei Su, another collaborator, said: “The mass extinction killed over 90 percent of species on Earth, and we see that in the catastrophic reduction in ecological function of the surviving animals in the ocean.

“At first, there were only a few survivors, and recovery began in deeper waters. The recovery of nekton occurred at the same time as the full rebound of infaunal ecosystem engineering activities.”

Alison Cribb, a collaborator in the study from the University of Southern California, added: “The first animals to recover were deposit feeders such as worms and shrimps. The recovery of suspension feeders such as brachiopods, bryozoans and many bivalves took much longer.

“Maybe the deposit feeders were making such a mess of the seafloor that the water was polluted with mud, the churned mud meant suspension feeders could not properly settle on the seafloor, or the muddy water produced by those deposit feeders just clogged the filtering structures of suspension feeders and prohibited them from feeding efficiently.”

Professor Chen added: “And some animals, such as corals, had disappeared completely. Coral reefs did not return until much later.”

Dr Feng concludes: “Why does it matter to understand these great mass extinctions of the geological past?

“The answer is that the end-Permian crisis — which was so devastating to life on Earth — was caused by global warming and ocean acidification, but trace-making animals may be selected against by the environment in a way that skeletal organisms were not.

“Our trace fossil data reveals soft-bodied animals’ resilience to high CO2 and warming. These ecosystem engineers may have played a role in benthic ecosystem recovery after severe mass extinctions, potentially, for example, triggering the evolutionary innovations and radiations in the Early Triassic.”

“Differential responses of infaunal ecosystems to variable environmental controls may have played a significant but heretofore little appreciated evolutionary and ecologic role in the recovery in the hot Early Triassic ocean.”

Dr Chunmei Su, another collaborator, said: “The mass extinction killed over 90 percent of species on Earth, and we see that in the catastrophic reduction in ecological function of the surviving animals in the ocean.

“At first, there were only a few survivors, and recovery began in deeper waters. The recovery of nekton occurred at the same time as the full rebound of infaunal ecosystem engineering activities.”

Alison Cribb, a collaborator in the study from the University of Southern California, added: “The first animals to recover were deposit feeders such as worms and shrimps. The recovery of suspension feeders such as brachiopods, bryozoans and many bivalves took much longer.

“Maybe the deposit feeders were making such a mess of the seafloor that the water was polluted with mud, the churned mud meant suspension feeders could not properly settle on the seafloor, or the muddy water produced by those deposit feeders just clogged the filtering structures of suspension feeders and prohibited them from feeding efficiently.”

Professor Chen added: “And some animals, such as corals, had disappeared completely. Coral reefs did not return until much later.”

Dr Feng concludes: “Why does it matter to understand these great mass extinctions of the geological past?

“The answer is that the end-Permian crisis — which was so devastating to life on Earth — was caused by global warming and ocean acidification, but trace-making animals may be selected against by the environment in a way that skeletal organisms were not.

“Our trace fossil data reveals soft-bodied animals’ resilience to high CO2 and warming. These ecosystem engineers may have played a role in benthic ecosystem recovery after severe mass extinctions, potentially, for example, triggering the evolutionary innovations and radiations in the Early Triassic.”

La dieta del buonumore, il benessere prima di ogni cosa

Il legame tra benessere fisico e psichico è molto più stretto di quanto si voglia pensare. Basta riflettere su come utilizziamo il cibo nei momenti della nostra vita: conforto, valvola do sfogo o anche come rimedio anti-noia. Quello che invece spesso ci sfugge è quanto la scelta dei giusti alimenti possa modulare le nostre emozioni andando a stravolgere anche il nostro umore e di conseguenza il benessere psicofisico in generale. A generare questi imput emotivi sono i neurotrasmettitori: delle molecole che permettono la comunicazione tra i neuroni e che fungono da mediatori nelle risposte del nostro organismo agli stimoli provenienti dall’esterno generando una rosa di reazioni molto varie. Tra i mediatori implicati nella regolazione dell’umore possiamo certamente porre l’attenzione su la serotonina.

La seratonina, cosa regola e dove si trova

La serotonina non a caso è detta anche “ormone della felicità”, è la portabandiera del buonumore e della serenità riuscendo anche a controllare le quantità dell’assunzione del cibo grazie alla capacità di aumentare il senso di sazietà. La serotonina interviene infatti nel controllo dell’appetito e del comportamento alimentare, determinando una precoce comparsa del senso di sazietà, una minore assunzione di carboidrati a favore delle proteine e una riduzione, in genere, della quantità di cibo ingerita. Non a caso, molte persone che lamentano un calo dell’umore (ad esempio una depressione pre-mestruale) avvertono un bisogno importante di dolci (ricchi di carboidrati semplici) e cioccolato (contiene e favorisce la produzione di serotonina, perché ricco di zuccheri semplici, oltre che di sostanze psicoattive).

La seratonina viene principalmente prodotta nell’intestino e nel cervello. Nel cervello regola il tono dell’umore, la qualità del sonno, la temperatura corporea, la sessualità e l’appetito. Nell’intestino la serotonina controlla la motilità, l’igiene e il benessere intestinale. Si percepisce già da qui come cervello ed intestino siano strettamente legati da quello che viene definito asse intestino cervello e come un malessere all’uno lo provochi all’altro. 

In quali cibi si trova la seratonina?

Appurato quindi che intestino e cervello parlano la stessa lingua e comunicano attraverso il sistema nervoso sulla base di neurotrasmettitori tra cui appunto la serotonina, la domanda ci sorge spontanea: esiste un modo per introdurre serotonina con l’alimentazione? Purtroppo l’ormone non possiamo introdurlo direttamente ma la serotonina viene prodotta dal nostro corpo a partire da un precursore presente negli alimenti: il triptofano. Non basta però introdurre gli alimenti che lo contengono per avere un aumento dei livelli di serotonina, ma è necessario anche che il pasto sia ben bilanciato in quanto un eccesso proteico rallenta la formazione di serotonina, scatenando una grande voglia di dolci. E qui nasce il problema perchè se cediamo a questa voglia, l’aumento di zucchero nel sangue provocherà la produzione dell’ormone insulina, che favorisce la penetrazione nelle cellule degli aminoacidi limitanti per l’assorbimento del triptofano, il quale resta in circolo nel sangue e viene facilmente assimilato a livello del sistema nervoso centrale, dove viene poi trasformato in serotonina. (Ecco quindi spiegato il motivo per cui quando siamo tristi vorremo solo affogare in un mare di nutella).

Per favorire questo meccanismo, ma evitare di ingrassare, c’è un trucco: è bene introdurre carboidrati complessi ed alimenti ricchi in fibre (verdure, frutta, pane, pasta e cereali integrali). Nel processo di formazione della serotonina, oltre ai cibi ricchi in triptofano, è fondamentale introdurre carboidrati, e vitamine del gruppo B, e la vitamina C. In particolare: Vitamina B3 (cereali, legumi, pomodori, latte, formaggi, pesce, carote, patate); Vitamina B6 (latte, pesce, cereali, patate, formaggi, spinaci, fagioli, carote); Vitamina C (frutta e verdura fresca in particolare di colore rosso e arancio, tipo agrumi, peperoni, ma anche broccoli e kiwi). Pranzo: insalata di cicoria (in quantità libera) 50 grammi di tagliolini conditi con un pezzetti di pomodori crudi, basico, aglio, 2 filetto di acciuga e 1 cucchiaino di olio. Merenda: 1 succo di frutta a piacere senza zucchero. Il legame tra benessere fisico e psichico è molto più stretto di quanto si voglia pensare. A generare questi imput emotivi sono i neurotrasmettitori: delle molecole che permettono la comunicazione tra i neuroni e che fungono da mediatori nelle risposte del nostro organismo agli stimoli provenienti dall’esterno generando una rosa di reazioni molto varie. Tra i mediatori implicati nella regolazione dell’umore possiamo certamente porre l’attenzione su la serotonina.

La seratonina, cosa regola e dove si trova

La serotonina non a caso è detta anche “ormone della felicità”, è la portabandiera del buonumore e della serenità riuscendo anche a controllare le quantità dell’assunzione del cibo grazie alla capacità di aumentare il senso di sazietà. La serotonina interviene infatti nel controllo dell’appetito e del comportamento alimentare, determinando una precoce comparsa del senso di sazietà, una minore assunzione di carboidrati a favore delle proteine e una riduzione, in genere, della quantità di cibo ingerita. Non a caso, molte persone che lamentano un calo dell’umore (ad esempio una depressione pre-mestruale) avvertono un bisogno importante di dolci (ricchi di carboidrati semplici) e cioccolato (contiene e favorisce la produzione di serotonina, perché ricco di zuccheri semplici, oltre che di sostanze psicoattive).

La seratonina viene principalmente prodotta nell’intestino e nel cervello. Nel cervello regola il tono dell’umore, la qualità del sonno, la temperatura corporea, la sessualità e l’appetito. Nell’intestino la serotonina controlla la motilità, l’igiene e il benessere intestinale. Si percepisce già da qui come cervello ed intestino siano strettamente legati da quello che viene definito asse intestino cervello e come un malessere all’uno lo provochi all’altro. 

In quali cibi si trova la seratonina?

Appurato quindi che intestino e cervello parlano la stessa lingua e comunicano attraverso il sistema nervoso sulla base di neurotrasmettitori tra cui appunto la serotonina, la domanda ci sorge spontanea: esiste un modo per introdurre serotonina con l’alimentazione? Purtroppo l’ormone non possiamo introdurlo direttamente ma la serotonina viene prodotta dal nostro corpo a partire da un precursore presente negli alimenti: il triptofano. Non basta però introdurre gli alimenti che lo contengono per avere un aumento dei livelli di serotonina, ma è necessario anche che il pasto sia ben bilanciato in quanto un eccesso proteico rallenta la formazione di serotonina, scatenando una grande voglia di dolci. E qui nasce il problema perchè se cediamo a questa voglia, l’aumento di zucchero nel sangue provocherà la produzione dell’ormone insulina, che favorisce la penetrazione nelle cellule degli aminoacidi limitanti per l’assorbimento del triptofano, il quale resta in circolo nel sangue e viene facilmente assimilato a livello del sistema nervoso centrale, dove viene poi trasformato in serotonina. (Ecco quindi spiegato il motivo per cui quando siamo tristi vorremo solo affogare in un mare di nutella).

Per favorire questo meccanismo, ma evitare di ingrassare, c’è un trucco: è bene introdurre carboidrati complessi ed alimenti ricchi in fibre (verdure, frutta, pane, pasta e cereali integrali). Nel processo di formazione della serotonina, oltre ai cibi ricchi in triptofano, è fondamentale introdurre carboidrati, e vitamine del gruppo B, e la vitamina C. In particolare: Vitamina B3 (cereali, legumi, pomodori, latte, formaggi, pesce, carote, patate); Vitamina B6 (latte, pesce, cereali, patate, formaggi, spinaci, fagioli, carote); Vitamina C (frutta e verdura fresca in particolare di colore rosso e arancio, tipo agrumi, peperoni, ma anche broccoli e kiwi). Non possono assolutamente mancare alimenti ad azione antiossidante di cui sono ricchi gli alimenti di origine vegetale, ma anche il pesce azzurro per il suo apporto di Omega3.
